Don’t Let Others Shut Down Your Dream! – Protect Your Dream

Walk strong like a tiger; protect your Dream.

Walk strong like a tiger; protect your Dream.

Protect your Dream. Feed your soul and hold a “shield” to block others’ distractions and comparisons. We’ll use the A.I.M. process:

A – align with your “heart energy”
I – intensify coaching
M – measure through meaning

  1. Align with your “heart energy”

My father gave me a backhanded gift: His denial of approval. When confronted with that withholding of approval these many years, I learned to listen to my own heart and my intuition.

When I say “align with your heart energy,” I’m talking about focusing on what makes your heart sing.

I’ve learned from directing feature films and writing 27 books that you cannot count on results. Find something that you want to put your heartfelt efforts into. You do your best, and the results turn out the way they turn out.

Don’t let other people tell you what’s important. For example, feature film director Norman Jewison suffered a box office bomb called The Art of Love. No one remembers that film today. But we still remember Norman’s films: In the Heat of the Night; Fiddler on the Roof; and Moonstruck (starring Cher and Nicholas Cage).

Norman put his heart into his films. That’s what counts. Sometimes lots of people respond favorably. Sometimes, they don’t.

Keep moving forward.

By the way, view this 7 minute video: “How to Believe in Yourself When Others Don’t”:

  1. Intensify coaching

Beware of letting random opinions shut you down emotionally. My father dumped opinions on me. Still, he had no clue about directing films, singing in a band, writing songs, writing books, and creating graphic novels. Unlike my journey, he had no experience in leading teams in the United Kingdom, India and the United States of America.

What my father knows about is being a letter carrier (now a retired mailman). After 30 years of service in the US Postal Service, he has one comment: “Use FedEx.”

Whenever, I wanted to do something unusual, I got coaching from someone who knows the field I would next explore.

When I first entered the speaking industry, I hired a coach and, with guidance, moved forward fast. (As an Executive Coach – Spoken Word Strategist, that’s what I do today. One client, Brad Carlson said, “Tom Marcoux coached me to get more done in 10 days than other coaches in 2 years.”

I’ve hired more than 8 editors. I’ve learned from each one. Along the way, I’ve written 27 books and countless articles (over 2 million words). Some people like my writing and others don’t. The naysayers do not stop me. I know a particular writer who looked with disdain at my writing. While he was criticizing, I wrote 27 books and he wrote none. He stepped out of my life. What a relief!

My friend, protect your dream. Do NOT let naysayers shut down your dream.

Don’t let uninformed opinions shut down your dream. Get suitable and empowering coaching.

  1. Measure through meaning

By “measure through meaning,” I’m referring to an empowering practice of choosing significant ways to measure the value of what you’re doing.

For example, as an Executive Coach, I coached a particular client in developing a blog that started from zero to blog-visitors from 141 countries.

I noticed that my client would get stuck in worrying about “how many people are following today” and “ooh! I lost a follower of my blog!”

To focus on meaning, I then asked her:

  • Are you writing from your heart?
  • Are you glad that people are responding to your postings?
  • Do you feel that your blog is worth it if 20 people are helped? 10? One person?

My point is: You pick what is meaningful.

Be aware of how easy it is to become addicted to “the numbers.” Some people “live” for just seeing whether the number of blog visitors has risen today.

Other people are living well while they are writing the current blog post.

Choose to focus on what really means a lot to you.

Find something healthy and uplifting and meaningful to focus on.

*  *  *

Realize that there is a big difference between supportive coaching, and some people who act like crabs. The phrase “crab mentality” refers to a behavior of crabs in a boiling pot. One crab tries to escape and the other crabs pull down that smart, trying to get away crab. It’s like the other crabs have a plan, “We’ll make you die, too. We will NOT work together so that we can all escape.”

Realize that your Dream is your escape from the boiling pot of a frustrated, empty life.

Identify the crabs in your life, and guard your personal energy. Eliminate time around crabs. If a crab is a family member – perhaps, you can greatly reduce your exposure to this person.

Do not let others shut down your dream.

Instead, nurture yourself.

The world will be better with your positive creativity in it.

How You Can Start on Your Dream Today – and Feel Better!

Look outwards; envision your dream.

Look outwards; envision your dream.

What’s your dream? Do want to start a project, film, a book, something else? The important thing is to “work with what you have.” We’ll use the G.O. process

G – get experience
O – organize “criteria for excellence”

1. Get experience

In creating film/video/music projects for over 20 years, I’ve noticed something: We always want more time and a bigger budget.

Having limits in time and budget mean one thing: Important choices must be made.

I’ve learned that having many creative experiences has given me an instinct for making decisions. Now, that is an advantage. I know when to switch gears and when to give people space to explore what they’re doing.

So I invite you to start small, right where you’re at. If you’re looking for a miracle, start something in motion.

If you’re a novice actor, have a friend use a consumer video camera and film you giving a monologue. If you like it, place it on YouTube.com!

If you’re a budding illustrator, pull out a sketch book and sketch something — anything that captures your attention.

Find your own way to show the world, in a small way, what you can do.

You’ll gain experience and then you’ll have a storehouse of insights and, perhaps, even a honed intuition to make your next project better. I know some creative people who took the “short view” and gave up too soon. Picture your lifetime. Just imagine how you’ll get better and better at your craft. Sometimes, the breakthrough happens in one year — or five — or ten. Enjoy the journey. With so much experience, you’ll be ready for your breakthrough when it arrives.

2. Organize “criteria for excellence”

As I mentioned, for each project there are limits of time, budget and even the endurance of the participants. Often, “going for perfection” is a moving target — and it may not even be appropriate. What makes a perfect painting?

I once asked a successful author, “How do you know when a book is done?” He said something a bit off color: “How do you know when to urinate?”

Sure, he got some chuckles from the audience. But there was a kernel of truth: The idea was “you just know!”

How do you know what to aim for when you do a project? Pause. Then write down what you choose as “criteria for excellence.” Only you know what is most important to be in your project. And at the same time, you choose what to drop–or let go.

For example, I’ll set a promotional film to be about 1 minute long. Why? Let’s face it: people are really busy. If I say, “How about looking at my film? It’s only 1 minute long,” many people will agree.

On the other hand, ask others to view something 2 minutes long, and many people will resist.

So I’ve set as one criteria for excellence: “1 minute.” See my video about my graphic novel Jack AngelSword at Mayan Ruins and helmet diving under the sea when you CLICK HERE] or click on the image below:

Consider this other facet of setting your own criteria for excellence: You know when it’s done. You aim to satisfy yourself. Why? No matter what you do–there’s someone out there who will criticize it. And that’s fine. It was not for them.

As I share with my graduate students, “At least satisfy yourself. If it moves you, it will move someone else.”

Most importantly, start today with what you have. Why? It’s really how you grow as a person and as an artist — whether your art is film or living your own full life.

Become Strong and Overcome Rejection

Break Free of any fence. Overcome rejection and Succeed!

Break Free of any fence. Overcome rejection and Succeed!

As his horse spun around, my father held on, captive on a runaway horse. He had to duck his head as the horse raced into the barn. Otherwise, he would have left a “face print” on the barn door frame. This horse Rejected the idea that this afternoon was about walking on the beach. Horses, other beings and people are likely to give us some resistance and even some outright rejection. We’ll use the C.A.N. process for dealing with rejection. Use these methods and become strong.

C – cancel the “3 Deadly Perceptions”
A – align with “what works” and “areas to improve”
N – nurture your “Let Go Ritual” and “Go Forward Ritual”

1. Cancel the “3 Deadly Perceptions”

Do you know someone who shoots down every new idea with comments like: “That won’t work. I tried that already. It didn’t work.”

It’s likely that this person suffers from a point of view dominated by the 3 Deadly Perceptions. It’s the viewpoint that something bad is Personal, Pervasive, and Permanent.

It sounds like this: “No. I didn’t get the job offer. There’s something wrong with me [personal]. In fact, I always screw up job interviews [pervasive]. I’ll never get better at this [permanent].”

The above disempowering habit of thinking can keep a person stuck in an unhealthy cycle.

It’s often not even true!

For example, imagine a kid saying, “I fell off the bicycle when learning how to ride for the first time. I always fall off. I’ll never learn to ride a bicycle ever.”

With some key words of coaching, this kid can learn to ride a bike!

The solution is to Turn Around the Words.

Personal
I always screw up job interviews.
Not personal
We did not have a match.
Pervasive
I mess up every interview.
Not pervasive
This was just one interview. I’ve learned something; I’ll do better on the next interview.
Permanent
I won’t find a job.
Not permanent
We did not have a match. I’ll find a job and company that are a good fit for me. And they’ll like the great job I do for the team.

In a sense, my opening story of my father and the errant horse relates to this point. It is NOT pervasive and permanent if you “get on another horse!”

And that was the solution for my father that day. The stable team found another horse, one that was cooperative, and my father and I enjoyed riding horses down the beach in Half Moon Bay, California.

Now it’s your turn.

Do you have a “reflex” to use words that program you in a negative direction?—that is, do you say things that hold to something bad as personal, pervasive, and permanent?

How can you turn your words into an empowering direction?

2. Align with “what works” and “areas to improve”

When I went on auditions for film and commercials, I used a journal. For every audition, I wrote“what works” (for example, “I mentioned my martial arts experience”) and “areas to improve” (for example, “Next time, I’ll make sure to show a whole range of that southern accent.”)

After I wrote down my encouraging words “what works” and the lessons learned “areas to improve”—I closed the journal. (I called this my What Works/Areas to Improve Journal.)

This was an improvement over the torture of ruminating that fellow actors and I regularly fell into.

Make any rejection situation transform into another experience when you learn and get stronger.

3. Nurture your “Let Go Ritual” and “Go Forward Ritual”

Years ago, the top time management/day planner company flew me into Utah. I stayed in a great hotel and had a good dinner at their expense. The next day I auditioned alongside two other finalists to be one of their time management strategy presenters.

I flew home and was soon informed that I did not get the job. It hurt badly. (I think that one of the other finalists, the attractive, articulate blond young woman, got the job.)

I felt rejected and hugely disappointed. But I did NOT stay there. Immediately, I implemented a “Go Forward Ritual.” In this case, my Go Forward actions were to rent a space and give a time management workshop built on my OWN material.

I did not have to wait for someone else to “say yes” to me. I stepped forward on my own.

This process echoed the time when my high school best friend replaced me as the leader of the movie production club that I had founded. I did not stay in the “the upperclassmen rejected me” place of thinking. Instead, my Go Forward actions were to start a new production club – the TV production club. Nothing would stop me from leading a team of students to make video productions. [This means so much to me that I wrote a book Nothing Can Stop You This Year! CLICK HERE for a Free Chapter ]

Book: "Nothing Can Stop You This Year!" at Amazon.com

Book: “Nothing Can Stop You This Year!” at Amazon.com

I have taken many appropriate risks. Sometimes, I’ve been rejected. I implement two things: a“Let Go Ritual” and “Go Forward Ritual.”

In recent years, my Let Go Ritual is “Celebrate Someone Disagrees.”

If someone rejects you as a friend, rejects what you’re selling or something else . . . they are disagreeing. The person does not agree with you about the value of something.

So what do you celebrate? You celebrate your efforts and your courage to reach out to people. You celebrate that you’re taking steps forward.

Some of my clients celebrate by getting together with a friend or even buying an empowering song from iTunes.

Here’s another form of a Let Go Ritual: Have a sheet of paper with “No” inscribed 20 times. At the bottom of the sheet inscribe “YES!” Every time you hear “no,” cross off a “No” on the paper. Now, you are one step closer to a golden Yes!

One salesperson has this Go Forward Ritual. If a sales phone call results in a rejection, the person places a quarter in a bowl and says out loud (after the call), “Next!” Then she places a smile on her face and makes the next phone call.

*  *  *

Put some attention and effort into making sure your daily actions strengthen you.

Be sure to develop your habit of writing in a What Works/Areas to Improve Journal. Instill some Let Go Rituals and Go Forward Rituals.

Successful people face more rejection than “average” people. Why? Successful people take more risks and with that, they can lose at times. We just hear about their successes.

Author Zig Ziglar said, “No one would go bowling if they couldn’t see the pins drop.”

I’ll add: “No one would go bowling if the pins automatically dropped and there was no challenge.”

As an Executive Coach, I help my clients develop a pattern so they measure their progress. Seeing progress keeps my clients energized and motivated. I emphasize: “Keep Score and Achieve More.”

Author Will Bowen wrote: “Problems keep us engaged.”

I’ll add: “Problems, including rejection, keep us growing, moving forward and having an interesting, fulfilling life.”

Go forward.

Better than You Imagined – Use Secrets of Law of Attraction, Law of Creation and Law of Being

“Really? You think I can do that?!” Sam asked. I’d seen such a look on the face of a number of clients. It happens when I encourage clients to explore what they really want in life.

It’s like the sun bursts through the clouds, and the clients feel the permission to express what’s deep in their hearts.

Asking is the beginning of receiving. Make sure you don’t go to the ocean with a teaspoon. At least take a bucket… –  Jim Rohn

Living a life of joy, adventure and fulfillment is like going to the ocean with a bucket to collect a LOT of sea water. I’m talking about collecting a lot of experiences, resources and cooperation for your extraordinary life.

Unfortunately, a number of people (I’ve talked with) have apparently given up on living on the “fulfilling-my-dreams” level.

What’s needed here is a shift in mindset. So we’ll use the G.I.F.T. process:

G – get others involved
I – imagine better
F – focus
T – “trust-build”

1. Get others involved

I made my first film when I was 9 years old. Immediately, I learned that there was a way to get people to participate in my projects. The answer was: “inviting people to have a good time.”

Nothing is impossible for the man who doesn’t have to do it himself. – A. H. Weiler

I learned that expressing appreciation and appropriately praising work helps people feel good about themselves, the team and the project.

2. Imagine better

This article is titled “Better than You Imagined.” I’ve learned that to be a leader you need to first imagine something better, communicate that vision and then set the “playground” so people can do their best work. (As an Executive Coach, I work with business owners and leaders to communicate so well that people naturally follow their lead and want to do a great job!)

Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions. – Albert Einstein

The leader is ahead of the team pointing in the direction of the positive vision. That takes imagination.

3. Focus

Focus is crucial for making a dream come true. I can come up with a book idea and with three editors (editing different sections simultaneously) finish a book in 90 days. How? I work on the project every day. That’s focus.

One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular. – Tony Robbins

Let others lead small lives, but not you. Let others argue over small things, but not you. Let others cry over small hurts, but not you. Let others leave their future in someone else’s hands, but not you. – Jim Rohn

Focus on what you want and do NOT let fear shut you down. I’ve written about courage often in my books because I’ve learned that taking action often requires pressing on despite fear.

Focus on the “big good” and you will feel the personal energy to navigate through “smaller bad.” Make what you want more important than fear.

It’s so important to me that I support clients, students and readers to expand their vision and efforts to create a joyful life that I wrote a book, just NOW released, entitled: Yes! Secrets for Your Best Life – Law of Attraction plus Hidden Power Increases Your Success and Happiness. [CLICK HERE for a Free chapter]

Here is an Excerpt:

IMPROVE YOUR LIFE BY COMBINING THE LAW OF ATTRACTION, LAW OF CREATION AND LAW OF BEING

The airplane wing raced toward my cameraman’s head. He was supposed to crouch down and let the wing swoosh safely over him. But he was standing. As the feature film director, I watched the whole set—in this case, the runway at San Luis Obispo airport. I ran, grabbed the cameraman, pulled him downward—and the wing cut the air above our heads.

As I caught my breath, I was grateful that I had not hesitated and that I had acted swiftly to protect my crew member. And I was grateful and excited that I was directing my first feature film.
Later, upon reflection, I realized that manifesting my big, first-time director opportunity was not just the product of the Law of Attraction. Two other Laws were involved: the Law of Creation and the Law of Being.

In a moment, I’ll provide “working definitions” of the Three Laws: Law of Attraction, Law of Creation and Law of Being.

First, let’s observe: The combined effect of the Three Laws is creating your life of prosperity, love, joy and fulfillment. For you to experience these benefits, I serve as your coach in this book.
Now, here are the definitions:

Law of Attraction: The operating principle of the universe that “similar energies are drawn together.” Positive thoughts act like magnets to positive life experiences and negative thoughts (given too much attention) attract negative life experiences.

Law of Creation: The operating principle of the universe that when you take action you create new possibilities. Often you are creating new impressions in other people’s thoughts. People start to view you as a “mover and shaker.” Their confidence in you and your project increases. Action breeds more action and more attraction of people and resources to make your dreams come true.

Law of Being: The operating principle of the universe that renewal and gratitude nourish you so you can have sustained prosperity, abundance and fulfillment. The central idea of the Law of Being is to shift to an empowered state of being. A reliable way to experience more joy and peace is to focus on what you’re grateful for.

* * *

With this section, I want us to hit the ground running. So I’ll now provide brief and pertinent information about the Three Laws. When I reflected on the successes that my clients and I have enjoyed in life, I realized that the combined effect of the Three Laws manifests amazing, positive outcomes. I then taught this to my clients, audiences and students in a quick memorable form: the 3 A’s.

The 3 A’s:
• Attraction
• Action
• Abundance

We can see how the elements correspond:
• Attraction (Law of Attraction)
• Action (Law of Creation)
• Abundance (Law of Being).

Now we’ll explore further . . .

Law of Attraction
I’ll now focus on two elements of the Law of Attraction:
1) To really invoke the Law of Attraction, go beyond the standard “Ask, Believe, Receive” process.
2) The Law of Attraction involves both spiritual and physical processes.

1) To really invoke the Law of Attraction, go beyond the standard “Ask, Believe, Receive” process.
A truly popular description of the Law of Attraction process is: “Ask, Believe, Receive.” You get clear about a personal heartfelt desire; then you ask the universe for that desire. Then you visualize the actual experience of receiving the desired outcome or object. Such visualization involves as many senses as possible. You come to truly believe that the desired outcome is yours. And the universe delivers what you want.

I’ve learned that the Law of Attraction process has many layers and textures.

What really helps is to create a combined effect of the three laws: Law of Attraction, Law of Creation and Law of Being.

What’s missing from many people’s attempt to use the Law of Attraction is action. Take action (invoke the Law of Creation) and discover that you become even more attractive to positive outcomes, opportunities and resources.

*** End of excerpt from new book Yes! Secrets for Your Best Life – Law of Attraction plus Hidden Power Increases Your Success and Happiness ***

4. “Trust-build”

With trust, big things happen. People commit to doing a great job. People follow your lead.

What’s one thing that can help you build trust? Listening.

I share with my clients: “When you’re listening, you’re winning.”

Also, develop your own personal standards. Be a little early for appointments. Be careful about your promises and write them down in your calendar. Live in such a way that people can count on you.

When people trust you, they’ll offer you cooperation and opportunities that untrustworthy people never hear about.

In a nutshell:

To create a life better than you imagined, develop good relationships and other people will help and make the projects more textured and literally better than you first imagined.

How fun!

Warmly,

Tom

Discover How to Enhance Your Love Relationship – The “Five-Minute Relationship Repair” Approach

Tom Marcoux holds up the book "Five-Minute Relationship Repair" by Dr. Susan Campbell and Dr. John Grey

Tom Marcoux holds up the book “Five-Minute Relationship Repair” by Dr. Susan Campbell and Dr. John Grey

Recently, I learned from authors Susan Campbell, PhD and John Grey, PhD as I studied their book Five-Minute Relationship Repair.

Drs. Campbell and Grey tie brain science to explain how couples get upset and go in downward spirals.

What really captured my attention is their emphasize on “co-triggering.” The authors explain that the real causes of emotional upsets is that certain things couples say or do function like a trigger that has “an alarm [go off] in the nervous system whenever it detects a potential threat to our survival, including a disturbance in our connection to ‘the one we depend on.’” (page 2).

In Chapter 9 (page 135) “Agree to Stop Scaring Each Other,” Drs. Campbell and Grey write: “Donna and Eric never intended to trigger fear in each other. But whenever Donna complained and Eric reacted by withdrawing, it scared Donna into believing her story that she didn’t matter to him. Her core need to feel connected would get frustrated, triggering her fear of being alone and unloved.”

The authors go on to relate how Eric would also get triggered. His core fears of being unacceptable and inadequate would arise while Donna complained.

On page 140, the authors reveal the “Pause-Calm-Repair” method. They demonstrate how this process can shift a “distressed relationship toward one of safety, acceptance and reconnection.”

My review of this book is in one word: “Wow.”

My sweetheart and I continue to enjoy our relationship of over 15 years. She has patience often, and I’m grateful for that. I know the truth of Drs. Campbell and Grey’s words. It takes daily, quick repairs to help one’s relationship flourish.

*  *  *

I truly agree with Dr. Susan Campbell’s and Dr. John Grey’s approach. Through being coached and learning much, my sweetheart and I have supported each other through the years.

In recent years, business leaders have gained coaches to excel. This follows the model that every Olympic athlete has a coach. I work as an Executive Coach and Spoken Word Strategist. Over the decades, I have studied with mentors, and currently I lead teams in the United Kingdom, India and the United States of America.

My point is: coaching is not just for business and athletics.

Coaching is vital for long-lasting, intimate, joyful relationships. And through this terrific book, you’ll gain coaching from Drs. Campbell and Grey.

It is a joy to recommend Drs. Campbell and Grey’s book Five-Minute Relationship Repair to you.

So learn from the authors’ stories and methods in this book, and get the coaching (in the book) to help you enhance your relationship every day.

Courage and How You’ll Succeed and Feel Happy

What? Am I happy?

What? Am I happy?

“What do you mean ‘It takes courage to be happy’?” my client Maria asked.

“You need the courage to say ‘I am happy’ each day. Because only you will declare it and make it manifest in your life,” I replied. I know this to be a fact. How? I have friends who merely complain about things that didn’t turn out the way they prefer. On the other hand, the most successful people I know appreciate all of the blessings in their life. We’ll use the I. A.M. process:

I – inquire
A – aim for joy
M – make space in your day

When you say, “I am”, you are programming yourself. This is important.

Your power manifests in your own choice of your programming.

1. Inquire

Ask yourself, “Why am I happy?”

You might ask, “How does this question help?”

The reason is that without the question, many of us will fail to see what is good and enjoyable in this moment.

Ask these questions:

* Why am I happy in this moment?
* What is happiness for me?
* Why am I content?

If you’re going through a really tough time, it is hard to focus on happiness.

I can relate. When my elderly mother was in the hospital (some time ago) for an extended stay, I was quite concerned. And, I was grateful that my sweetheart was there supporting me through the daily extended visits.

As an Executive Coach, I help people make a shift in focus so they do the next action–one that is powerful and positive. Often to take the next and positive action, it really helps to ask an empowering question.

So try these helpful questions:

* What am I grateful about in this moment?
* What is still going well in other parts of my life?

My own personal coach asked me, “Tom, why are you happy?”

I immediately replied, “Because I know who I am. And what I want. And what direction I am going in.”

You may notice that my happiness did not rest on getting any one thing at any particular time. I remember this quote:

“Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

I would add: “You’ll find happy moments when you’re going in the direction of your highest good. A lot of happy moments arise in the context of expressing love, creativity and contribution to humankind’s rise.”

2. Aim for joy

If you do not make enjoying your journey of life as one of your priorities, you’ll miss it.

For example, one of my friends insists that life is merely a test and happiness only exists in the afterlife. And guess what? She is the most miserable and sickliest person I know.

Researchers talk about the “self-fulfilling prophesy” and how our thoughts manifest in our moods and physical health. In fact, there are decades of research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology that support this viewpoint.

My point is that I find the people, with more energy and doing kind things and great achievements, are generally happy about what they’re doing in life.

By the way “aim for joy” does not mean you’ll avoid disappointments. In fact, when you have specific goals you may experience “more disappointments.” However, you’ll have the energy to bounce back faster. It’s worth it. Life goes up and down, and with bumpy times — and that’s better than a flat, “blaaaaah” approach to life.

3. Make space in your day

So how busy are you? Whoa! Wrong question.

How about: “What do you regret failing to place into your daily life?”

The truth is: we’re all too busy, and life slams us with demands each day.

Now what?

Well, you could remain like a puppy on a raft in the middle of the ocean, buffeted around by the currents.

Or you could gain or build a motor and guide your raft forward in the direction you choose.

My point is that everyday I make time for laughter and creativity and time with my sweetheart and friends (at least on the phone).

Since I developed these habits I have (for many years) enjoyed wonderful amounts of energy and excellent health.

When I talk about making space in your day, I’m including “writing a second draft” of something you would say to someone else [or yourself].

For example, recently, I was in the restroom, and I saw that a family member had left an empty toilet tissue roll.

My first thought was to say to the family member, “Apparently, you don’t remember the episode of the TV Show “Mad About You” when the Helen Hunt-character taught her husband to change the toilet paper roll.”

Now if I actually said that, what do you think I would have received? At minimum, a dirty look. Perhaps, 30 minutes of arguing.

Instead, I avoided saying any type of sarcastic remark, and the evening turned out warm and joyful.

So now, I’m asking you to pause before you say the first thought that pops up in your mind like a knee-jerk reaction. “Write a second draft” and seek to speak positive words to your friends and loved ones. That is, make space in your day for happiness.

I invite you to be courageous and declare “I am happy” and find your daily answers to: “Why am I happy in this moment?”

You’ll be different. And you may need to keep your answers (to “Why am I happy in this moment?”) mostly private. Why? Some people are not happy and they do not want to hear about someone doing well. Be sure to limit your time with such people.

Remember:

I – inquire
A – aim for joy
M – make space in your day

When you’re happy, you spread happiness.

Love Yourself to Spiritual Joy

Sleeping enough? Take good care of yourself. You are important!

Sleeping enough? Take good care of yourself. You are important!

Have you ever been cut down by a friend or family member and just wanted to shake off the pain and get on with your life? We’ll explore three truths that will nurture you.

1. Spiritual Joy is in this present moment.

Earlier today, I went to see my father and mother. They live in another city some distance from me. My mother is a kind, generous soul and I wonder how she got burdened by my father who seems to become bitter to a greater degree with each passing year.

My sweetheart proclaimed today that she never wants to be in the presence of my father again.

I can empathize with that.

The rude and mean comments that my father said today remind me that Spiritual Joy is in this present moment. How?

My interaction with my father is in the past.

I have a choice right now as to what I do. Sure a painful thought may arise; my choice is in my next thought. So I now choose to have better moments as I write this article. I find comfort and insight as I write. I also find meaning in sharing helpful ideas with my readers. Before today, I had expected to complete and post a different article. But now this article feels relevant and timely.

We have a choice with each moment: To make the most of this moment or to get lost in pain or regret of the past. Or to be twisted by worries for the future. Either way, we step out of the present moment.

You see my father’s cut-down remarks of today echo how he’d throw me into walls when I was a boy.

The difference is that as a man I now chose to end the conversation. When his remarks were too much, I simply said, “We’re done,” and I stepped away from him. My father left the building.

I chose my next moment. Away from my father, I sat with my sweetheart and my mother and we had some good moments together.

2. Become skilled to return to the present moment.

Many spiritual paths emphasize deep breathing, prayer or quiet time to bring us into the present moment.

As I write these words, I take deep breaths, allowing my belly to expand on inhaling. I exhale and allow my belly to deflate.

Try three such breaths now, and see how you start to feel more calm.

Another method of returning to the present moment is embodied in the phrase: “I don’t run that show.” I use this phrase to remind myself that there is much I do not control. I do not control my father’s bitterness. I do not control that my kind mother is married to someone who routinely says to her and me, “You make me mad.”

An old phrase is: “You teach people how to treat you.” Today, I ended a conversation in which my father berated me. That may or may not help.

I make choices as best as I can. And still, “I don’t run that show.”

Why is it important to return to the present moment? It’s where you can experience joy. Also, if you’re clear of past pain, you can respond to opportunities in the present moment.

When you answer the knock of opportunity, you need your bags already packed. – Tom Marcoux

3. Compassion is the answer.

Some definitions of compassion include “recognizing another’s pain with the desire to relieve it.”

Imagine that you truly love yourself. What would that mean?

Would you allow yourself to be imperfect?

I’ll put this another way. What would you say to your best friend if he or she was going through a difficulty?

Wouldn’t you be kind? Wouldn’t you suggest that your friend take care of himself or herself?

Sure you would.

I’m inviting you to look upon your own pain with compassion.

Give yourself what you need.

Further, I invite you to explore how you release yourself from painful feelings. Forgiveness actually frees the person who forgives.

I choose at this time to avoid cutting off interaction with my father.

The next time I see him he may address me with berating words–or not.

I’ll see what happens when I get there.

I call this “enter the moment fresh.”

When I see my father the next time, will I respond to his berating words with “We’re done” or will I listen for a time?

I’ll enter the moment fresh.

And I’ll remember that compassion toward myself and to others will be a helpful guideline.

Compassion helps us experience spiritual joy.

As an Executive Coach, I help my clients develop skills, strength and stamina. It’s vital to learn to take good care of ourselves.

(By the way, the above article is one I wrote some time ago. I am glad that in later interactions with my father that I had the strength to listen to him, to hear him out. He still had an edge to some of his words, but he had some okay comments, too. Some men do not age gracefully. As they lose things in their lives (my father lost his ability to go running), some men fail to flow forward. I advocate that we do not stand for abuse. Still, there are times to show compassion. Showing compassion takes real personal energy. Take good care of yourself. Many blessings on your journey.)

Enjoy Enhancing Your Courage through the Law of Attraction

Book:

Book: “Yes! Secrets for Your Best Life – Law of Attraction Plus Hidden Power Increases Your Success and Happiness – on Amazon.com

Imagine feeling great courage. The Law of Attraction can help you with this. For some of us, the idea of the Law of Attraction is comforting. It can be thinking: “Oh, if I think positively, then positive outcomes are surely on their way to me.”

The law of attraction is the attractive, magnetic power of the Universe that draws similar energies together. It manifests through the power of creation, everywhere and in multiple ways. – Remez Sasson

So the idea that the Universe will get behind you and help you manifest what you truly want can enhance your courage.

On the other hand, other people may feel some fear related to ideas of the Law of Attraction. They might have certain thoughts arise: “Wait a minute! If I’m worried about something, I’ll draw exactly what I fear to me!”

I’ve learned that although fearful thoughts may arise, the answer is to condition yourself to think of empowering thoughts after a fearful thought. I call this The Power of Your Second Thought.

For example, I help my client Sara deal with certain fearful thoughts. Recently she said, “When I think of ‘oh no, I don’t have enough clients’ — I’ve trained myself to think: ‘What can I do right now? Can I call someone I know? Can I help someone and brighten their day? Can I call someone new? How can I now plant positive seeds for good opportunities?” That’s the Power of Your Second Thought.

I’ve also learned that to manifest what you really want often calls for courage.

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. – Nelson Mandela

Here’s where courage comes in. Some people think of a big, positive dream for their lives but then feel fear. “What if it doesn’t work out? What if I lose money? What if I look foolish and my friends and family make fun of me?”

It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. – J. K. Rowling

The courage part is to keep moving forward in spite of the fear.

To use the Law of Attraction in your favor, do take time and think of what you really want. Then donot just stay in that one mode of thinking. Start getting more information and training—and Take Action!

Now I’m going to share really practical methods. Knowing and using these practical methods will build up your positive thoughts (attracting positive outcomes). Getting in tune with the Law of Action (plus the Law of Creation and Law of Being) is so important that I wrote a whole book on this entitled: Yes! Secrets for Your Best Life – Law of Attraction Plus Hidden Power Increases Your Success and Happiness (Free Chapter when you CLICK HERE )

We’ll use the C.A.N. process:

C – cover the downside
A – arrange your own approval
N – nurture yourself

1. Cover the downside

Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy. – Dale Carnegie

Here’s an important part of “getting busy.” Make a plan for how you can do fine even if your planned action creates disappointing outcomes. If I do 20 projects, some of them will not yield the income that I prefer. But I move ahead anyway. How can I do that? Each project has a budget so I can withstand a loss or two because the budget was not too big to “sink the whole company.”

That’s what I mean by “cover the downside”: The downside would be investing money in a project and then the project does not break-even. To cover the downside would be to strategically keep the budget low enough.

In essence, that’s making a thorough plan that includes allowances for missteps. Having a thorough plan can boost your courage.

Successful people know and use ‘the numbers.’ – Tom Marcoux

Another way to boost your courage is to “know the important numbers.” By this I mean: identify what specific steps and items you need to improve.

Measurement is the first step that leads to control and eventually to improvement. If you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it. If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it. – H. James Harrington

Successful people know how much income must be brought in by sales to breakeven and to go into profit.

They know, on average, how many marketing phone calls lead to gaining a new client.

Here’s where you boost your courage. If you don’t measure things, you will likely have “free floating anxiety” because so many things will be uncertain.

On the other hand, as soon as you write a plan on paper and take some action, you’ll feel stronger. Your courage will expand.

Such good thoughts and good feelings, by the Law of Attraction, will bring you better and better results.

2. Arrange your own approval

Let’s return to this quote: It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. – J. K. Rowling

I have had friends who could NOT see my vision for projects. They warned me against moving forward on certain projects. If I had listened to them, I would have been stopped in my tracks. Some projects like my book Darkest Secrets of Persuasion and Seduction Masters: How to Protect Yourself and Turn the Power to Good [free chapter when you Click Here] have yielded income every month. So those particular friends were wrong!

What happened then? They merely shrugged and said something like: “Oh, well. Some things turn out okay.”

Okay! They almost led me down the path of doing nothing and helping nobody. That’s serious.

So I invite you to avoid living for anyone else’s approval. Set your own internal and personal standards. In essence, “arrange your own approval.”

3. Nurture yourself

Acting in a courageous manner takes energy and internal reserves. How do you have such reserves? You nurture yourself. I’ve said to clients: Take breaks or be broken. As an Executive Coach, I help my clients develop skills, strength and stamina.

When you nurture yourself, you’re truly building up your resilience. And to manifest your dreams you need a big helping of resilience! When you stretch and grow, you‘ll have some projects and some experiences that really disappoint you. But you can be proud of yourself that you demonstrated courage. You took an appropriate risk. Good for you!

*  *  *

To really get the Law of Attraction working for you, approach your activities with strategy. Use strategy in how you think (habitually) and how you make plans and take action.

Your courage will expand and the Law of Attraction will assist you in manifesting terrific outcomes.

Do You Know the ONE THING that Could Transform Your Life to Big Success?

Tom Marcoux lands jet ski in feature film scene.

Tom Marcoux lands jet ski in feature film scene.

Do you know what will most benefit your personal success? Do you want to get more done? Answers arise when you find your own empowering responses to this question: “Are you ready to succeed?”

Here’s a second, related question:“Everyday are you training, rehearsing and studying so you are ready to jump at opportunity?” (This is the ONE THING that could transform your life to Big Success.)

This means so much to me that I read 81 books a year. I also have a number of mentors.

This ability to be ready has meant a lot to my life.

Several years ago, I was co-producing and directing a feature film. We were able to get a small budget together but not a budget that could afford a particular lead actor.

My co-producer turned to me and asked, “Tom, why don’t you play that role in this feature film?”

My first response was: “I’m already directing. That’s a lot of work.” But soon after, I said, “Yes!” I’m glad that I responded with “Yes.” I have good memories of doing action scenes as a leading character in the feature film. [In the photo connected to this article, I’m doing the stunt with the jet ski. Yes — I did stunts and fight scenes.]

Can You Say “Yes” to the Big Challenges?

How could I say, ‘Yes’ to both starring in and directing a feature film? It’s because I had trained as an actor. I had acted in a number of short films and I had acting mentors.

*  *  *

Later, I gave a speech to help people out of work learn how to effectively gain jobs. I taught them how to develop their effective personal brand. The San Francisco Examiner designated me as “The Personal Branding Instructor.”

After my speech, a person came up to me to me and said, “You should be a speaker at [xy] company.”

I replied, “Who do I talk with?”

The man told me.

“Do you have your cell phone? How about you leave a voicemail for her?” I asked.

I knew that the man  was likely at the peak of valuing my speech — so I guided him to leave a message in that moment–at the height of his enthusiasm for me to speak for [xy] company.

That one discussion led to work that totaled more than $361,000.

In three sentences, I guided someone to help me get connected to a valuable opportunity.

How did I do that?

I was ready!

Now, I’ll guide you through the Y.E.S. process

Y – yearn for knowledge and experience
E – energize yourself
S – set up rehearsal

1. Yearn for knowledge and experience

Remember my earlier question: “Everyday are you training, rehearsing and studying so you are ready to jump at opportunity?”

To be ready, you must prepare everyday. You never know when an opportunity will present itself.

We simply do not have the time to make a bunch of mistakes. By studying and reading, you can learn from those who have achieved much. You can avoid the mistakes that they have gone through. You’ll save time. You’ll do better than you would have without the knowledge.

Also, get training. Practice. Some years ago, I practiced negotiating by going to a flea market and negotiating over the price of books. I kept track of what I learned over the years and wrote a book, Darkest Secrets of Negotiation Masters (see a free chapter when you CLICK HERE )

Stay on a continuing quest to improve your skills.

2. Energize yourself

Enough sleep, exercise and good nutrition form a solid foundation for your success. Without energy, you cannot confidently and powerfully say YES! to opportunities when they appear. When you want to improve something, measure it. For example, some of my clients log their sleep hours. I emphasize: Don’t guess. Measure for Success.

3. Set up rehearsal

When my clients complete rehearsal sessions, I can tell and I praise them for their good work. When they have not done five days of 9-minute Rehearsals, I can notice that, too. And so can the audience!

As an Executive Coach, I work with clients so they can rehearse for vital speeches, meetings and important one-to-one conversations. I also train clients in effective sales methods. It’s not just about information. It’s really about rehearsal with a coach and creating new neural pathways in one’s brain — so you succeed on whole new levels for success.

For more about how I help clients perform at higher levels and Build Their Brand, see this 1.8 min. video:

Ideally, you complete a 9-minute Rehearsal session in the morning. Why? Then your subconscious mind can work on the material throughout the day.

Use the Y.E.S. process so that you’re READY for surprise opportunities.

Take your life to a higher level—faster.

Warmly,

Tom

Discover How to Put More LIFE into Your Life – The “You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader” Approach

Tom Marcoux holds Mark Sanborn's book

Tom Marcoux holds Mark Sanborn’s book “You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader”

Recently, I learned from author Mark Sanborn as I studied his book You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader.

Mark emphasizes “Everyone has the opportunity to lead, every day.”

He asks these questions:

“Do you shape your life and career?
Do you affect the quality of others’ experiences?
Do you inspire or influence others?
Do you work to achieve specific goals by working with or coordinating the efforts of others?”

We influence others every day. And it begins with us. Mark says, “All leadership begins with self-mastery. You can’t lead others until you can first lead yourself.” (page 28 – of You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader – look inside his book when you CLICK HERE).

Some of us may find the idea of “self-mastery” to be daunting. Still, I’ll always remember what Mark wrote: “Leadership is influence. . . . People remember stories. Stories are the coat pegs of the mind. They are where people hang their ideas. Once they have a memorable story to help them remember, they can recall whatever important moral or point you have to make.”

So I’ll continue on this topic. When you want to “first lead yourself” take a careful look at the stories you tell yourself about yourself.

Mark wrote: “If you want to be a leader in your own life and in the lives others, you’ve got to follow through on your own promises.”

So continuing this idea: let’s make sure that we tell stories about when we made a promise and we came through and actually did what we promised. That’s an important part of leading yourself!

You can put more life in your life when you focus on keeping your promises and telling the stories that truly influence people for the better.

Further along in his book, Mark identifies 3 Cs – Character, Competence and Connection (page 53). Mark wrote: “To harness the power of others, you have to persuade them to follow your lead. . . . To get others to follow you requires character, competence, connection.”

Mark then demonstrates how to improve in all three dimensions.

*  *  *

I truly agree with Mark’s approach. I have been a leader since I directed my first film at 9 years old.

Over the decades, I have studied with mentors, and currently I lead teams in the United Kingdom, India and the United States of America. I’m known as a CEO who coaches leaders to maximize their influence and impact. From experiences directing feature films, creating and publishing graphic novels and business books and more – I know truthful discussions of what it really takes to lead. And Mark’s book is truthful and helpful.

As I was preparing to write this article I came across so many powerful quotes, I said to one of my team members, “I might as well underline and quote Mark Sanborn’s entire book!”

It is a joy to recommend Mark’s book, You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader, to you.

You may not be leading a company at the moment. Still, you lead yourself, perhaps, a group of friends and in your own family.

I’ve seen a number of times that when I personally demonstrated greater patience, family members followed my lead and calmed down.

So learn from Mark’s stories and methods in his book, and be the leader who makes a positive difference each day.

Warmly,

Tom
