What It Really Takes to Succeed!

Keep your success flowing!

Keep your success flowing!

“How do you build a following with people from 69 countries visiting your blog, Tom?” my new client Alicia asked.

“I’ve found it comes down to what I call The 3 Cs: Caring, Consistent and Competent,” I replied.

  1. Caring

People can sense it. Does the person care?

People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. – John C. Maxwell

To build a blog fan base or any other kind of following, readers want to know that you care, that you tell the truth and that you’re trying to be helpful. (Okay—I realize that some things are oddities and some sites are just for entertainment.)

Now it’s  your turn. How can you communicate that you’re making efforts to be helpful?

  1. Consistent

Can people rely on you to keep providing content?

A professional is someone who can do his best work when he doesn’t feel like it. – Alistair Cooke

In a conversation, a friend called me one of the happiest artists/writers he knows. The reason? I finish projects. I write everyday. I put in consistent effort. I sit down and start writing regardless of my mood.

Inspiration usually comes during work rather than before it. – Madeleine L’Engle

Now it’s your turn. What do you need to do more consistently? Do you have a personal brand (like a reputation) that you consistently complete projects?

  1. Competent

There are no shortcuts here. You need to study, rehearse and take action. A novice speaker asked me about whether he needed a college degree to be a speaker. I replied, “You need Authenticity, Evidence and Experience—what I call A.E.E.”

To demonstrate your competence, we need to know that you have experience and that your work creates excellent results. That’s the evidence we’re looking for.

Now it’s your turn. What evidence can you show that your work gets great results?

To expand your success, remember The 3 Cs: Caring, Consistent and Competent.

Warmly,

Tom

What the Rich Don’t Say about Getting Rich

“I’m afraid that if I really raise my income, some bad things will happen,” my friend Sharon said. I listened with compassion and then shared some helpful ideas. When I speak on the topic “What the Rich Don’t Say about Getting Rich,” I share two blunt but useful details:

1) Accomplishments alone do NOT make you happy.
2) You better have self-care and a support system or things “blow up”!

1) Accomplishments alone do NOT make you happy.

What happens to a significant number of people when they attain financial freedom is that they get surprised about feeling bad, and elements of life fall apart. A number of authors including Jim Rohn and Peter H. Thomas reported that they hit millionaire status and then lost it all. (They persisted and gained the wealth again!)

Additionally, top author and business leader, Tony Robbins reports that when he had first earned a lot of wealth, things fell apart for him. He said, “I started to be harsh to people who didn’t deserve it. I started to miss important meetings.”
What is going on here?

I’ll put this in one word “connection.” That is, you need to focus on connection. If you want to enjoy happiness, you need to take significant steps to nurture real, loving, supportive connections in your life.

And it’s not just having people who support you. It’s about you being committed to support others.

Tony Robbins reports that he really did better in his business when he connected how many people he wanted to feed during Thanksgiving to how much he needed to expand his business. He said, “To feed all the people I wanted to feed, I needed to raise my business to the level of $3 million.”

So if accomplishments, earning more and more money, taking more vacations, don’t lead to happiness, what does?

I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve. – Albert Schweitzer

Having purpose, meaning and some joy in the moment while being good to others comprise vital elements of a happy life.

I’ll share something more about the process. I guide my clients to have more than accomplishment-goals (I note this and more in my book What the Rich Don’t Say About Getting Rich — look inside the book when you CLICK HERE). I invite my clients to have “Green Goals” (like an ever-renewing Green Forest … or “Being Goals”). The idea is human beings need to support their own inner peace.

When you’re prosperous, it’s vital to stay connected to that part of you which is compassionate. When you’re prosperous, it’s easy to stay in a state of high expectations and when life has bumpy times to get into a state of frustration.

“… we’re not actually in control, which is a pretty scary idea. But when you let things be as they are, you will be a much happier, more balanced, compassionate person.” – Pema Chodron

This idea of “letting things be as they are” runs straight into the wall of “being a control freak.” In my book, The Hidden Power of the AND-Universe, I note that we do better when we acknowledge how the universe functions. For example, you can:

  • Focus on gratitude AND go for more (more prosperity, new and different experiences)
  • Feel happy in the moment AND endure uncertainty
  • Use strategy to make effective business moves AND do that which supports your spiritual well-being

“I equate ego with trying to figure everything out instead of going with the flow. That closes your heart and your mind to the person or situation that’s right in front of you, and you miss so much.” – Pema Chodron

By the way, the effective business person sees the signs of potential trouble ahead and they respond well to such signs. That means you keep your heart open and your mind free to be aware of the person or situation right in front of you.

For example, I’m quite selective in which clients I work with as an Executive Coach. I’m in the business of transformation and not in the business of Band-Aids. I approach a conversation with a prospective client with my mind open and aware. I approach the conversation with gentle curiosity. Then I can observe what is really present in the person and the situation.

So a useful Green Tranquility Goal is to condition your mind to shift to what’s known as Observer Mind. If you’re feeling frantic, use the method of “Stop. Breathe. Observe.” The idea is to disengage from an unhealthy pattern.

Now it’s your turn. What can you do on a daily basis to support yourself in shifting from high intensity to inner calm?

2) You better have self-care and a support system or things “blow up”!

Robert Downey, Jr. rose to significant heights in the film industry, and then imploded.

He acted out, got into significant trouble and repeatedly went to jail. “You can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it … [and] … I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me,” Downey said.

Starting in July 2003, Downey began, he reports, a process that has kept him drug-free. He credits meditation, therapy, twelve-step recovery programs, yoga and the practice of Wing Chun kung fu to his recovery.

Downey also said that his wife significantly helped him overcome his drug and alcohol habits.

Let’s pay special attention to the word habits. If you have the habit of not getting enough sleep, you could really self-sabotage your efforts to expand your prosperity. As an Executive Coach and Spoken Word Strategist, I support clients to create a transformation in their lives. Often this is the process of putting in systems and effective habits–and avoiding the faulty reliance on “willpower.”

(As a sidenote: Governor of California Jerry Brown gave Downey a full and unconditional pardon for his prior drug convictions.)

Why do things “blow up”? One detail is that when you’re rich, you do not have to fit into structures that keep a lot of people grounded.

Recently, I gave a workshop on Discover Your Enchanted Prosperity, and I mentioned that a vital element is to notice how you’re interacting with the world. Are you, in this moment, focused on love or fear? “Some of us don’t feel a connection to the idea ‘love.’ I suggest we consider ‘be kind.’ Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself like you would a good friend. Be kind to others. Being kind and trustworthy are vital to getting more business. [Learn about the next Discover Your Enchanted Prosperity workshop/networking event when you CLICK HERE )

“Man with unsmiling face should not open a shop.” – Chinese Proverb

The idea is to take care of yourself so you have a smile. I’ve guided graduate students and my clients to develop the personal brand of ‘T.H.O.R.’ That is: Trustworthy, Helpful, Organized and Respectful.”

Now it’s your turn. How are you going to nurture your own inner peace? Will you do kind things for yourself including enough sleep, good nutrition, exercise, quiet time? How are you going to stay connected with other people? How will you shift your thoughts into a compassionate state of being?

My upcoming book What the Rich Don’t Say about Getting Rich dispels a number of myths about creating sustainable prosperity.

Remember:

1) Accomplishments alone do NOT make you happy.
2) You better have self-care and a support system or things “blow up”!

Warmly,

Tom

Want to Feel Free and Enjoy Happiness? Use the “Clearing Emotional Clutter” Approach

Tom Marcoux holds Donald Altman 's book "Clearing Emotional Clutter"

Tom Marcoux holds Donald Altman ‘s book “Clearing Emotional Clutter”

You want to feel free and happy—yes? Valuable methods are found in a book I just had the chance to learn from: Clearing Emotional Clutter: Mindfulness Practices for Letting Go of What’s Blocking Your Fulfillment and Transformation by Donald Altman.

Altman writes on page 5: “The purpose of Clearing Emotional Clutter is to help you heal and move on from pains, insults, traumas, toxic stressors, and emotional clutter from the past and the present—without blaming, shaming, or punishing yourself.” Powerful material!

On page 94, Altman invites us to do three things to use acceptance for nurturing friendships. He recommends:

“1) Notice frailties—your own and those of others—without being too harsh, 2) Be supportive and express happiness for your friend, and 3) Practice forgiveness for those times when your friend may be less than perfect.”

On pages 154-155, Altman warmly invites us into his personal journey. He details the time when he was experiencing the process of divorce from his wife. Feeling distraught, he finally stepped out into nature and (as he writes) …

“I lifted my gaze upwards to the gently swaying treetops and expansive starry sky. What I did next may surprise you. It did me. I let my worries go….

… There was just this expansiveness, this space, this sense of connectedness …. Somehow, “Donald” got absorbed into the big picture, into the great cathedral of trees and the black mystery of space and stars. It didn’t come to me in words, though I have since put words to it. It’s all the blessing. It’s all the blessing. The good, the bad, the divorce, the fears, the monetary settlement, all of it, however it turned out. Yes, all of it was the blessing.”

The above excerpt is just a “taste” of that which Altman writes. I include it here to give you a flavor of the truth and kindness that is in this book.

My clients and I tend to devote much time to doing a lot. Altman’s book is an oasis that comforts you and guides you to deeper connection, compassion and a new, blessed level of living.

In Chapter 15 (page 163), Altman invites us to learn and use “Daily Flexibility, Softening and Letting Be.” This is real support.

How You Can Avoid Disaster — and Take BETTER Action to Enjoy More Success

Pull your OWN strings

Pull your OWN strings

When the ember rose up, it fell toward a small area behind a mini-bookcase in Sam’s living room. Sam, a friend of mine, had simply blown out a scented candle that his wife had left burning. Still, he was surprised when a bit of the candle wick (the ember) flew up.

Sam’s wife said, “The ember went out.”

Still concerned, Sam quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher that they stored in another room.

He remained in the living room (with the now extinguished candle) and repeatedly checked to see whether or not the little ember had found dust to ignite.

Fortunately, no errant spark nor fire was ignited.

This story inspired me to identify three following elements. When I speak on the topic “Get Real or Get Hurt: Get False Stuff Out of Your Way and Succeed,” I begin with a “myth.”

Myth: You can get by when you only seek ways to be comfortable.

A Way You Can Get Hurt: A small problem may grow bigger and smother the goodness in your life.

Get Real Principle: Keep vigilant. Ask yourself, “What reality do I need to face?”

Have you or someone near you said, “I knew I should have done something about that a while ago”?

That “something” is an ember that can start a raging fire—given time and fuel. Many problems just get bigger with the passage of time.

I was talking with my own coach and I voiced a question (since I’m an Executive Coach myself). My question was: “What reality do I need to face?”

At the time, I realized that I need two opposing methods to insure both my continued efforts AND to keep up my own morale.

For my own business, I needed to increase the number of marketing phone calls that I made in a day. Prior to this, I had shied away from holding myself to a “quota of calls.”

Then I came up with a process that I call “Both Ends Power.”

Picture a ruler. On the left end is marked “Quota” and on the right end is marked “Daily Journal of Victories and Blessings.”

During the day, you make efforts toward your quota—for example 10 marketing calls.

At the end of the day you write down your personal victory “completed 8 marketing phone calls.” The idea is to look upon the 8 calls as a Victory to note in your Daily Journal of Victories and Blessings.

Yes—I realize that one did not hit the ideal of 10 calls. Still, it’s helpful for celebrate the 8 phone calls completed.

We’re talking about a psychological truth backed by research: only punishing oneself does NOT ensure consistent, positive behavior.

Instead, we need to measure our behavior AND we need to pay attention to the “little wins.”

Now it’s your turn.

What can you measure? That’s part of “what reality do you need to face?”

How will you note your “little wins” or victories? Will you consider noting each victory in a Daily Journal of Victories and Blessings?

With clients and audiences, I emphasize this idea: “Better than zero.” If you are in the process of changing your behavior and placing new things into your routine, make sure that you pay attention to your incremental progress.

Research reveals that it takes at least 10 seconds of paying attention to a positive detail to get that detail into our long term memory. I advise writing in a Daily Journal of Victories and Blessings.

That’s a great way to end your day. And that’s the second part of the two sides of the metaphorical ruler—when we use the process of “Both Ends Power.”

The best to you.

Tom

Want More Personal Energy and Happiness? Use the Overcoming “Expectation Hangover” Approach

Tom Marcoux holds Christine Hassler 's book "Expectation Hangover"

Tom Marcoux holds Christine Hassler ‘s book “Expectation Hangover”

What if you could transform setbacks into tremendous opportunities? I’ve just learned much from the book: Expectation Hangover: Free Yourself from Your Past, Change Your Present and Get What You Really Want by Christine Hassler.

Hassler emphasizes “Expectation Hangovers hold keys for transformation (page 27).” She defines an Expectation Hangover as “the myriad of undesirable feelings, thoughts, and responses present when one or combination of the following things occurs:

  • things don’t turnout the way you thought, planned, or wanted them to
  • things do turn out according to your plans and desires, but you don’t feel the fulfillment you expected
  • you are unable to meet your personal and/or professional expectations
  • an undesired, unexpected event occurs that is in conflict with what you wanted or planned.”

The symptoms of an Expectation Hangover include lack of motivation, depression, confusion, irritability and more.

Hassler advises that we connect with our own compassion (p. 54). She emphasizes that we need to release feelings instead of recycling (and reliving) disempowering emotions. One of many practical methods she shares is “Release Writing” (p. 57).

Further, Hassler guides us to release guilt and regret (p. 86).

She takes us deeper and reveals: “The Universe often delivers a do-over to give us a chance to practice and fully embody healthier responses to Expectation Hangovers (p. 136).” Further, she writes: “Do-overs give us the opportunity to say no to something we may have said yes to in the past.”

A special advantage of Hassler’s book: She delivers wisdom through poignant stories and some humor. I’ll always remember her advice: “Don’t Go to a Chinese Restaurant for Nachos.” (p. 192) In just one sentence, she reminds us to think through and develop a better perspective about real things in our life. Hassler tells the story of how someone she knows, Beth, finally gave up the fantasy that her absent father would change and suddenly become present for his grandchildren.

I’m a coach who works as a CEO leading teams in the United Kingdom, India and the United States of America. In working with clients, I know that instead of more time management skills they need personal energy management skills. Using the skills and methods Hassler advocates CREATES more energy for you.

Thus, it is a joy to recommend Christine Hassler’s book Expectation Hangover to you.

Tom

Want More Success and Happiness? Use the “Stop Being Lonely” Approach

Tom Marcoux holds Kira Asatryan 's book "Stop Being Lonely"

Tom Marcoux holds Kira Asatryan ‘s book “Stop Being Lonely”

You want to be happy and more successful—yes? Valuable methods are found in a book I just had the chance to learn from: Stop Being Lonely: Three Simple Steps to Develop Close Friendships and Deep Relationships by Kira Asatryan.

Asatryan emphasizes “Closeness is the foundation of all happy and long-lasting relationships, whether romantic, platonic, familial, or business.”

She says, “It’s not a lack of people in our lives, it is a lack of feeling that speaks to the heart of a new loneliness [many experience].”

The new book Stop Being Lonely addresses how we can become better at building relationships—at work and at home.

On page 131, Asatryan writes: “I am good at … reading the room. Reading the room means being able to sense what’s going on within a particular group of people. It’s metacognition, an awareness of the undertone that always emerges when people get together. It’s being able to tap into an emotional field. It’s a feeling.” In her book, she provides practical methods so one can become aware of other people’s feelings and then take action that reveals that you care.

Asatryan works, in part, as a team coach who trains Silicon Valley startups to work cohesively. There is bottom-line value in learning how to do two things that she emphasizes: “knowing and caring.” On page 141, she notes, “There are ways to respond to another person’s feelings that work to move you two toward closeness.” She suggests imagining how you would feel if you had been in the other person’s shoes. She points out “face-to-face conversation is always the best choice; the emotional information available to you in real time is invaluable.”

On page 201, Asatryan writes: “[A] way in which two people create a culture of closeness is by making memories together.” I can relate to that. I brought my filmmaking team (Northern California) with me to a particular studio (Los Angeles) to do some finishing touches on a feature film I directed (that later went to the Cannes Film market). All of us remember those times including stopping by Universal Studios theme park.

On page 244, Asatryan shares these insights: “Our new kind of loneliness is caused by our society’s collective ignorance about what to do to have the kinds of relationships we want. It’s caused by a status quo for interacting with one another that many people find unfulfilling. It’s caused by modern inventions that blur the line between what’s being alone and what’s being together. It’s caused by environmental factors…”

Want to Raise Your Game so You Succeed at Higher Levels? Use the “Mad Genius” Approach

Tom Marcoux holds Randy Gage 's book "Mad Genius: A Manifesto for Entrepreneurs"

Tom Marcoux holds Randy Gage ‘s book “Mad Genius: A Manifesto for Entrepreneurs”

Do you want, deep in your heart, Real Success? – the kind of success that has you catch your breath, smile big and just about say, “It’s a miracle.” Randy Gage, author of the new, sensational book Mad Genius: A Manifesto for Entrepreneurs, points out that it’s important to open your thoughts for “a big idea or theme that pulls everything together.”

One thing that I appreciate about Gage’s writing is that he gets straight to the point and shakes things up. We entrepreneurs don’t have time for the repeat of the usual positive thinking/this is how you market slogans.

On page 19, Gage writes:

“Mad Genius starts with a decision. The decision to tap your genius is about thinking in new and different ways. It happens when you refuse to accept no and decide to find a way. Even when there isn’t a way.”

On page 115, Gage emphasizes: “When you know how to solve problems, you know how to create wealth. And when you know how to see and act on possibilities then you know how to create disproportionate wealth.” He points out that Steve Jobs “envisioned a possibility (the iPad) for something that, once people were exposed to it, they simply had to have.”

On page 125, Gage reports: “The optimal state for you is what scientists call whole brain synchronicity, in which you have thoughts going back and forth, creating neural pathways between the right and left hemispheres of your brain.” He advises that we stop categorizing ourselves as left-brain dominant or right-brain dominant. We need to expand our perceptions and thinking.

As an entrepreneur and CEO leading teams in the United Kingdom, India and the USA, I appreciate Gage’s insights and coaching to think bigger.

On pages 134-136, Gage provides a vivid example in which bureaucratic red tape caused one of his deals to go upside down. He concludes: “You can’t do business with small minded people … If you ever find yourself in this situation, the smart move is to cut your losses and move on.”

Randy Gage seeks to shake you up and get you to realize that “if you want to really unleash your Mad Genius, you have to be willing to question any and all core foundational beliefs you have … It’s all about critical thinking, to make sure your beliefs are based on correct premises.”

Gage emphasizes: “Don’t be worried about the doubters, cynics, or haters. Be worried if you don have any. And know this: The haters don’t really hate you. They hate themselves because they don’t have the guts to do what you’re doing.”

For all of us entrepreneurs, it’s vital that we drill down and focus on the critical few and stop allowing ourselves to be distracted by the noise. As an Executive Coach and Spoken Word Strategist, my job is to help leaders and business owners reach and at times exceed their potential for higher levels of success and even happiness. This gives me a real appreciation for what Randy Gage’s book accomplishes.

Randy Gage’s book, Mad Genius: A Manifesto for Entrepreneurs will help you think more expansively and to raise your game. You have the potential to live your best life as an entrepreneur.

It is my joy to recommend this book to you.

Warmly,

Tom

Let’s face it. If you’re the leader, you need to be at your best. Now is the time to get an expert into your corner. That expert is Laura Stack, who lives up to her title as “The Productivity Pro.” I give you this context to express the power of her new, sensational book, Doing the Right Things Right: How the Effective Executive Spends Time.

In this book, Stack introduces “The 3 T Leadership Model.” On pages 4-5, she writes:

“Strategic THINKING: Acting as the organizational strategist who focuses on business goals …
TEAM Focus: Serving as the conscientious leader who focuses on employee productivity…
TACTICAL Work: Being the productive performer who focuses on task completion.”

The above means a lot to me because as a CEO leading teams in the United Kingdom, India and the United States of America, I recognize the power of clarity and implementing excellent methods.

On page 88, Stack emphasizes the importance of “1) Monitor Trends in Your Industry, 2) Reward Efficiency and 3) Take Advantage of Opportunities as They Appear.” She emphasizes “the need for speed” and a focus on “innovating constantly.” Part of the power of reading her guidance is to heighten your senses to see how you can improve your business practices. That’s essential.

On page 99, Stack coaches us to “Work ON your business, not IN it.” She emphasizes that “you’re an executive, so your actions should make your teams’ work easier, improve the workflow, build profitable bridges with other teams and organizations, intercept red tape, and accomplish other substantial tasks.” This advice reminds us to cut away the non-essential and to sharpen our delegation skills.

On page 178, Stack reminds us to answer these vital questions for ourselves: “How measurable are your goals? … Are you proactive or reactive?” These are good kicks in the rear to remind us to keep our eyes open about our own patterns of behavior.

The power of this book is in how Laura Stack tells the truth. She does not hold back. On page 194, she coaches us to get on top of our own self-care (our own health and more).

For all of us leaders, it’s vital that we make the most important into The Most Important.

As an Executive Coach and Spoken Word Strategist, my job is to help executives reach and at times exceed their potential for higher levels of success and even happiness. This gives me a real appreciation for what Laura Stack’s book accomplishes.

Laura Stack’s book Doing the Right Things Right: How the Effective Executive Spends Time is evidently designed to coach you to your best life as a leader. Make reading this book a priority. You’ll profit much from such a good decision and action.

Warmly,

Tom

Get Real or Get Hurt – Get False Stuff Out of Your Way — and Then Succeed!

"Get Real or Get Hurt" a speech by Tom Marcoux

“Get Real or Get Hurt” a speech by Tom Marcoux

“Tell me something you know to be true, Tom,” my long-time friend Sara asked.

“You need a good combination of optimism AND realism to do well in life. That’s why I refer to myself as an OptiRealist,” I replied.

I decided to write a speech on this topic:

“Get Real or Get Hurt:
How You Can Get False Stuff Out of Your Way
and
Create the Abundance, Success and Happiness You Want”

I read many books each year (74 books in 2015). I’m drawn to those authors who tell the unvarnished truth. Why? So I can Save Time, Save Efforts, Save Money and . . . protect myself in certain situations.

That’s why the topic “Get Real or Get Hurt” arose in my thoughts.

About “False Stuff,” we can lose time, money and tears when we get caught up in false ideas, false methods and even false friends.

“It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” – ascribed to Mark Twain

I know the power of optimism. Without optimism, we do not put in efforts.

For example, I know someone, Eric, who had the optimism and vision that earning a  masters degree in illustration would help him in his career. It’s working. Eric is one of my team members working on my graphic novels entitled Jack AngelSword.

Still, we need strategies and realism to endure and triumph over the setbacks in life.

A novice speaker asked me if one needed academic degrees to be a professional speaker. I replied that a speaker needs Authenticity, Evidence and Experience. (I noted this as “A double E”—referring to A.E.E.)

My work is built on experience NOT theory.

In this article, I’ll share a portion of my “Get Real or Get Hurt” speech.

The structure I use is:

  • Myth
  • A Way One Gets Hurt
  • The Get Real Principle

Myth #1: If you do the right things, you can rest in the idea that your friends will stay for a lifetime.

A Way One Gets Hurt:
You’ll waste time and you’ll lose personal energy in trying to please people who really cannot support you and cannot understand you.

The Get Real Principle:
Be different—be YOU.

I learned the hard way that doing my best and doing a lot of listening to some individuals is not valued by them. One friend (who drifted away) told me at the end of a phone conversation: “That was largely useless.”

I replied, “I do not do useless things. I care about you. If you have an emergency, feel comfortable to call me. But I will not be calling you.”

This decision to separate from this friend did not arrive lightly to me. I had made efforts over more than two decades to keep being a good friend and keep listening. The truth was: this person did not value my listening. It was time to let the person drift away.

So I came up with this paragraph:

Some friendships are novels.
Some friendships are short stories.
Some friendships are a sentence.
Put a period on that and get away!

[Okay. As you notice, I’m using the word “sentence” with both meanings.]

The Get Real Principle is “Be different—be YOU.”

When you are genuine and you support your real self then you simply feel better.

You avoid twisting yourself for other people’s approval. You’ll have real friendships. You’ll be strong, and you’ll be okay if some friendships turn out to be short stories. When you step into a new chapter of life, not all of your friends will want to go with you.

Still, if you treat yourself like a cherished friend, you’ll enjoy more moments of happiness and even success.

Now it’s your turn.

Do you have any friendships that are truly unhealthy for you? What truth do you need to face? Do you need to limit your exposure to some negative people (even certain relatives)?

Myth #2: You can make good money at just about anything.

A Way One Gets Hurt:
You can lose a lot of time doing projects that do not yield excellent results because the pattern is self-defeating.

The Get Real Principle:
Have a Good Business Model.

A close friend (I’ll call him “George”) died under tough circumstances. In his 60s, George struggled to barely pay his rent each month. Why? His business model was garbage. By this I mean, he was working too hard for too little return. There was no way to get ahead.

George wrote press releases. I’d ask him, “Can you go back to your previous clients and see if they have more work for you?”

“No,” George replied. He explained that he could write the best press release, but if something startling happened in the news, his press release could be ignored. George was leaving a trail of unhappy clients.

“George, you’ve been a journalist for so long.” I began. “You know how to coach someone to do well with the press, TV interviews and more. How about building up that end of your business?”

Sadly, George just “didn’t get around” to making the needed changes in his Business Model [his system for earning income and running his business.]

George struggled greatly until his last breath on earth.

I helped George—for example, transporting him to the hospital and staying with him for five hours. Still, his business model was doing him in.

On the other hand, a good business model looks like this:

  1. You can get repeat business.
  2. You’re building assets.

(For example, my team works on my franchises (the assets): Jack AngelSword, Jennalee Storm, TimePulse and Crystal Pegasus. If you’re curious, see the Crystal Pegasus graphic novel when you CLICK HERE. The TimePulse book is HERE. Franchises are often built on intellectual property.)

  1. You’re expanding how you serve clients.

(A mnemonic device is “REB” – related to Repeat Business, Expand, Build Assets.)

Here’s an example of “REB.” I had the idea for a particular speech title. In the same week, I set an engagement to speak on that topic at a conference. Then in 30 days, I had a book completed and up on Amazon – on that new topic.

Above, I’ve shared a part of my speech “Get Real or Get Hurt.” (In a sense, this speech continues the work of my book Darkest Secrets of Persuasion and Seduction Masters: How to Protect Yourself and Turn the Power to Good. See a Free chapter when you CLICK HERE.)

At this blog, we’re talking about YourBodySoulandProsperity.com.

I hold to the idea of having a light heart and enjoying some laughter each day.

Still, it’s valuable to face reality and strategically act for your benefit and others.

Yes, I am an OptiRealist.

As an Executive Coach, I do a lot to help my clients use the strength of optimism and the effectiveness of realism to make their dreams come true. I often function as coach, consultant and mentor. I save my clients lots of time, effort and tears. My clients then get to focus their personal energy to leap forward faster. One client said, “Tom Marcoux coached me to get more done in 10 days than other coaches in 2 years!” – Brad Carlson, CEO of MindStrong, LLC.

Find your way to balance optimism and realism for your journey.

Warmly,

Tom

Jump Start 2016! – How You Can Get Clear and Move Into Your BETTER Life

Don't sleep through the opportunity; listen for how to truly enjoy your life!

Time to Wake Up to taking a Step for Your Great 2016!

“I’m told that I need to focus on one niche. It’s such a big decision, and I’m stuck!” my client Sandra said.

“I hear you. I have three sets of questions that will help you focus on your specific area that will in turn bring you both happiness and success.”

“Wow! Let’s do this!” Sandra said.

We’ll use the G.E.T. process:

G – get clear
E – energize your difference
T – target clients you want

  1. Get clear

I helped Sandra with these questions:

Niche Business Questions:

  1. Who do you want to help?
  2. Where’s the fun?
  3. In what ways is the target market like you?
  4. How can you heal them and heal a part of you?

In our conversation, I learned that Sandra wanted to help people get beyond the dark time of intense grief.

At the end of the session, her interaction with my 4 Questions yielded: “I want to teach women at a conference in Hawaii!” She was surprised at this outcome.

My job as her Executive Coach was to help her free herself from the chains of asking for too little and trying to fit into some conventional ways of thinking and being.

Now it’s your turn.

Imagine that you can get a big start on your path by writing out your answers (on a sheet of paper or in a journal) to these questions:

  1. Who do you want to help?
  2. Where’s the fun?
  3. In what ways is the target market like you?
  4. How can you heal them and heal a part of you?

  1. Energize your difference

Every day people are bombarded with thousands of marketing messages.

You and your work need to be different—to stand out.

I’m often asked by clients to help them come up with their niche in business—that is to make a breakthrough in their marketing. I introduce them to what I call “Different, Specific, Authentic (DSA).”

If one is going to do a workshop, it needs to be

Different – to be unique and rise above the noise in the marketplace
Specific – How will the workshop provide particular benefits?
Authentic – Are you teaching about something you personally went through? Then you can be authentic in teaching this particular workshop.

Beyond this, when I help a client develop his or her marketing campaign, we focus what I call “A double E” – that is, Authenticity, Evidence, Experience.

I ask questions that include:

  • What do you know to be true?
  • What evidence do you have that what you do works for people?
  • What is your personal experience that means a lot to you? – How can your hard-earned wisdom help someone else?

Now it’s your turn.

Take a moment. Do not start with an end result (a seminar/book/speech) first. Start with your answers to these questions:

  • What do you know to be true?
  • What evidence do you have that what you do works for people?
  • What is your personal experience that means a lot to you? – How can your hard-earned wisdom help someone else?

See how these answers serve as a launch pad.

  1. Target clients you want

When working with a client, I help the person focus on what I call the Triple-Power:

Work you do well –> Work people will pay for –> Clients you WANT

If you do something well (for example, poetry) but no one will pay for it, you may want to do it with your other efforts to make a living. (It’s an “AND-universe.”)

Another vital element is Clients you WANT. Often, I hear people complain about “terrible clients.”

I’ve learned that you can set up your business so you work with Clients you WANT. I have only a few clients whom I coach. I’m so careful about the selection that I talk with their references. Why? I give a significant portion of my time, energy and life to working with a particular client. So I have a process to work only with clients I want.

One author, Rich Litvin, said, “I only coach Kings and Queens.” By this, he means he only works with people who take responsibility and who do not get mired in a “blame others pattern.” That approach related to “Kings and Queens” is powerful.

Now it’s your turn.

Use a sheet of paper. Draw and label three separate circles. “Work I do well” – “Work People will Pay For” – “Clients I WANT.” Fill in the circles with ideas. See how some of these ideas overlap. Eventually, you can see how something can simultaneously fit all three labels.

“Anything with heart sells.” – Ed Sheerin, singer/songwriter

Some might disagree with Ed Sheerin. Still, we do notice that people want to have their emotions moved. (I wrote a new book entitled Emotion-Motion Life Hacksa free chapter when you CLICK HERE)

When you feel great about what you do, you can set the potential client at ease. That’s a good start!

Embrace that your life has chapters. A new chapter may begin at any time. Each chapter may involve your climb to a mountain peak. At the top of each peak, you see new peaks from which you can choose. Then you can travel toward the new peak you hold as your new target. Consider stepping forward. Take an action. Move beyond hesitating. Take a step.

Warmly,

Tom
