“How do you build a following with people from 69 countries visiting your blog, Tom?” my new client Alicia asked.
“I’ve found it comes down to what I call The 3 Cs: Caring, Consistent and Competent,” I replied.
- Caring
People can sense it. Does the person care?
People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. – John C. Maxwell
To build a blog fan base or any other kind of following, readers want to know that you care, that you tell the truth and that you’re trying to be helpful. (Okay—I realize that some things are oddities and some sites are just for entertainment.)
Now it’s your turn. How can you communicate that you’re making efforts to be helpful?
- Consistent
Can people rely on you to keep providing content?
A professional is someone who can do his best work when he doesn’t feel like it. – Alistair Cooke
In a conversation, a friend called me one of the happiest artists/writers he knows. The reason? I finish projects. I write everyday. I put in consistent effort. I sit down and start writing regardless of my mood.
Inspiration usually comes during work rather than before it. – Madeleine L’Engle
Now it’s your turn. What do you need to do more consistently? Do you have a personal brand (like a reputation) that you consistently complete projects?
- Competent
There are no shortcuts here. You need to study, rehearse and take action. A novice speaker asked me about whether he needed a college degree to be a speaker. I replied, “You need Authenticity, Evidence and Experience—what I call A.E.E.”
To demonstrate your competence, we need to know that you have experience and that your work creates excellent results. That’s the evidence we’re looking for.
Now it’s your turn. What evidence can you show that your work gets great results?
To expand your success, remember The 3 Cs: Caring, Consistent and Competent.
Warmly,
Tom
