Use the Secret and the Truth to Clear Your Path to Real Success and Happiness

Opendoor

Open the door and step forward to Real Success and Happiness.

“Does anybody come out and tell the truth about success and happiness?” my friend, Marina, asked.

I’ve reflected on this in the course of writing 45 books (Look inside the books when you CLICK HERE).

First, if someone (some movie or song) says that you only need one thing to be happy, the person is trying to sell your something—or they’re delusional.

On the other hand, we’ll use the H.A.P.P.Y. process:

H – have something significant to do
A – adapt to uncertainty
P – protect your strength
P – perform what nurtures your being
Y – yield to natural laws

  1. Have something significant to do

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. … I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake.” – George Bernard Shaw

George Bernard Shaw died at age 94. Looks like he was onto some truth. He had things to do—things he really wanted to make happen.

“The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve.” – Albert Schweitzer

“They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou

Each day we have opportunities to do something significant. Each time I walk into a university and see a custodian cleaning a floor or gathering the trash, I say, “Thank you for your work.” I’m grateful that I can teach MBA students in such a clean and wholesome environment. Someone made that happen, and I thank them for their work.

I might be the only one who says anything to them.

You can be the one person who brightens a person’s day.

“To stand out, find out what you stand for.” – Tom Marcoux

  1. Adapt to uncertainty

“There is no way to happiness; happiness is the way.” – Dr. Wayne Dyer

Ever feel like you’re on a boat that is only held together by a few strands of rope? Do you long for a time when you’ll be free of uncertainty, worries and difficulties?

My friend, don’t hold your breath. The path you are on—the path of uncertainty—is the path of happiness!

Successful people I’ve interviewed have become skillful about making progress in the face of uncertainty.

Often, I share with clients:

When you’re in action, you’re focused, and fear is a quiet voice in the background.

Don’t try to duck uncertainty. Instead, make well-considered decisions and take appropriate risks.

“Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product of a well-lived life.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

  1. Protect your strength

“You can help a thousand, but you can’t carry three on your back.” – Jim Rohn

We must protect our own personal strength and health. With my clients, I suggest they ask themselves: “Does this strengthen me?”

“Courage is not the absence of fear but rather the judgement that something is more important than fear.” – Meg Cabot

“Courage is easier when you’re prepared.” – Tom Marcoux

When you protect your personal strength, you have the energy and clear thinking to do the courageous actions that make your life better. My phrase is: What you dread, gets you ahead.

  1. Perform what nurtures your being

“Do you duty,” my father said, years ago. I replied, “I do my duty, and it’s not making me happy.” My point was that I had to do more than just “my duty”—I needed to take care myself like I would a great friend.

If your friend was visiting, you’d make sure they had great food and a comfortable place to sleep. That’s doing the right thing. Do the right things for yourself, too. Keep yourself strong and healthy.

With my clients, I emphasize what I call Green Goals which can include actions like: enjoying daily quiet time, meditation, exercise, tai chi, yoga, taking a daily walk outside, renewing times with friends and family.

Consider seeing a funny video or something else to enjoy humor and laughter each day. Additionally, I play the piano briefly each day.

  1. Yield to Natural Laws

Natural laws? Here’s one. Sleep well and you’ll think more clearly.

Here are other natural laws:

  • If you’re miserable, you create misery in others.
  • Take care of yourself because no one else can do this properly.
  • Make decisions based on your heart and NOT on others’ approval.
  • Your body needs to move. It was designed to move. Be sure to exercise.

“Why are these natural laws?” my friend, Marina, asked.

“Because they are connected to natural consequences. You do certain things and you get certain results. You fail to do daily self-nurturing actions, and you’ll get hurt,” I replied.

I’ll share two more ideas related to natural laws.

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” – Oprah Winfrey

“Forgiveness is releasing yourself from a cycle of blame and suffering.” – Dr. Fred Luskin

Holding a grudge often hurts the health of the grudge-holder. The topic of forgiveness is way too big for this article. I mention it here as a reminder to all of us to seek ways to elevate our consciousness, so we can live with freedom and strength.

In summary, remember:

H – have something significant to do
A – adapt to uncertainty
P – protect your strength
P – perform what nurtures your being
Y – yield to natural laws

Warmly,
Tom
