“Why can’t I go forward faster?” my friend, Stephanie, asked.
“Let’s get specific. What’s bothering you at the moment?” I asked.
“I got to go to this business dinner, and I feel tired just even imagining that I might attend,” she said.
As an introvert myself and in conversation with other introverts, I’ve noticed that the Big Lie about introverts is that introverts are shy. That’s not true. Shy is a set of behaviors. When I was younger, I did certain behaviors that caused other people (and me) to consider that I was shy.
Then, with mentors and training I got past those “shy behaviors.” However, I remain an introvert. Being an introvert is about one’s personal energy. With audiences I say, “An extrovert has a giant pizza pie of energy. The introvert has a pecan pie. As a comparison, someone with clinical depression has a dinner mint of energy.”
Another way to look at the lie about introverts is: It’s not true about introverts having trouble in conversations. Introverts can be some of the best conversationalists because we listen well. We think things through. And, we don’t interrupt as much as some extroverts do.
The important truth about being an introvert is about a limit on your personal energy. You need to be strategic about how you use your energy. When I was younger, I was so angry with myself for not attending every networking event and not saying yes to every opportunity to give a speech.
Then I learned the Secret for an introvert: Become really good at the few networking events you attend and the few client conversations you have. Be great in the few speeches you give to groups of prospective clients. (This is vital because introvert’s pay out energy when they are in a group of people.)
